SAMMY AVILA

La Casita, June 21, starting at 4 pm

Sammy has performed many times at La Casita and in venues across the city of Syracuse in the last 10 years. He moved to Syracuse in 2006 and he enjoys sharing the kind of music that is deeply rooted in Caribbean culture and in his Westside community in Syracuse.

He will be performing and making music with guests at La Casita Cultural Center, programming starts at 4pm. Read more about Sammy Avila and his love for music below.

Sammy Avila.


What is your band’s name, how many are in your band?
Sammy y su Trío.


Where are you from?
Guaynabo, Puerto Rico.


What kind of music do you perform/what instruments do you play?
Vocals and guitar, Cuatro.

When did you start performing/playing/singing? What got you into music?
I was 9 years old, 1964.

Are there any musicians who inspire you? What qualities do you admire about them?
I admire the traditional cuatro music of Puerto Rico – Don Maso Rivera. I admire his humility and his connection to the people, and his joy.


If your fans could remember one thing about you/your band, what would it be?
I would like to be remembered as a happy and humble musician of the neighborhood.

Describe your favorite venue for performing.
In Syracuse, the Festival Latino Americano. In Puerto Rico we used to play in the Club Casablanca in Bayamón.


Tell me about your favorite performance in your career.
In Panama with La Predilecta orchestra in 1975.


What's the best piece of advice another musician ever gave you?
To be humble, not arrogant, and to be flexible with the business part of it.
“Que fuera humilde, no arrogante y fuera flexible con lo del negocio.”
