Remsen Remembers 250th

Mark your calendars for the 250th Remsen Remembers Event!  In honor of the 250th Anniversary of our country’s Declaration of Independence, there will be a celebration of the history of Remsen on the weekend of July 18th and 19th.  The Remsen-Steuben Historical Society, along with the Remsen Performing and Visual Arts Center, the Remsen Depot, and the Didymus Thomas Library, are planning engaging programs that encompass history, culture, and fun for all ages.  This event will offer unique musical and historical programs that will enhance the knowledge and understanding of our local history. Here are some highlights.

Saturday and Sunday 11-1 pm:

  • Immerse yourself in days gone by exploring the remarkable model of the Village of Remsen, created by our local Town Historian, Pat Hill or view the slide show highlighting our history.
  • Tour the Village using our Walking Tour Brochure and discover the history of special landmarks.
  • Experience guided tours at some of Remsen’s most beloved landmarks including:  The Stone Meetinghouse, the Didymus Library, the Performing Arts Center, and the Remsen Depot.
  • View quilts displayed at the library.
  • Explore exhibits that highlight important citizens such as Welsh abolitionist Robert Everett, the Revolution’s drill master, Baron Steuben, and Olympic Bronze medal winner Erin Hamlin.
  • Visit antique railroad cars and Model-T’s.
  • Participate in Colonial Games and crafts at both the Remsen Depot and the Didymus Thomas Library.

 

In addition, there will be special programs from 1-3pm at the Remsen Arts Center.

 Saturday, July 18th

  • 1-2 pm Cincinnati Creek Band will offer original bluegrass music on traditional instruments, banjo, guitar, mandolin, and bass fiddle. This all-American music form has roots in colonial times borrowing from early Irish, Scottish, and African music. They will share history of the area through a variety of original songs written about local events.
  • 2-3 pm The Oneida Indian Nation will speak on their contribution to the American Revolution.

Sunday, July 19th

  • 1 pm Reenactor(s) will read the Declaration of Independence from the porch of the Arts Center.

·       1:30 pm Honoring Revolutionary Veterans - Jean Kraeger, President of the R-SHS, will speak on local Revolutionary War Veterans who settled here.  At the conclusion, the audience will stand to honor those who fought for our freedom during “Taps.”

·       2-3 pm Fort Stanwix in the Revolution- Presented by staff from Fort Stanwix National Monument. Attendees will discover the geographic importance of the Oneida Carry, how that led to Fort Stanwix being reconstructed in 1776, and its overall role in the War.  In addition, participants will be introduced to little-known stories of those who served at the fort and how their contributions to the American Revolution helped to wind American independence from England.

·       3 pm A performance by the Remsen Community Jazz Band will delight all ages!
