The civic republican tradition, which goes back to Aristotle and Machiavelli, emphasizes self-government, civic virtue, and non-domination. Civic republicanism influenced the American founders but was eventually superseded by liberal individualism. Can a civic republican revival help inform a coherent political vision uniting the disparate strands of today's progressive movement?
