Vanessa German uses paint, mixed media, sculpture, and performance to directly confront racism and violence in today’s society. Based in the Homewood section of Pittsburgh, a neighborhood devastated by drugs and crime on a daily basis, German creates work in response to her life experiences.

For the Everson, German presents a selection of her recent work, including an army of sculptures reminiscent of African Nkisi power figures, which are believed to bestow protection and eradicate evil. German’s power figures are radical empowerment objects designed to absorb the challenges of daily life and create an environment open to radical amounts of peace, beauty and love.
